"La Union" means "the union".
Historically, the municipalities that comprise the province of La Union came from the other municipalities of the provinces of Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan and Benguet. They merged as one to create the province of La Union.

The main livelihood of the people are: hand-woven blankets (Inabel),

Public transportations :
MOTORBIKE
Although the fare is expensive, this is the one used for places that are hard to reach such as going up to the mountains. These are available only at the towns of Bagulin, Burgos, Bangar, Sudipen, Santol and San Gabriel.
- for two to three persons only (including the driver).
- good for hard/rough terrains
TRICYCLE
It is a motorbike with a side car for passengers. It is the most practical way to go from one point to the other. They roam around the town and usually always on the go. They can also be hired to transport you to the outskirts.
- available 24 hours on most town centers
- good for short distance travels (around town) such as going to the malls and government centers.
- good for up to 3-4 passengers only
JEEP / JEEPNEY
- It can accommodate as much as 18 passengers
- good for inter-town travel and into interior towns such as San Gabriel.
- available from morning to a certain time at night (not 24 hours)
- some can also be hired for group travels.
Mini-BUS
It is slightly smaller than the big regular buses and usually not provided with aircon but recently some of them are now provided with such and can be side by side with the big buses.
- good for inter-town travel
- it has many stop-overs and usually maximizes their number of passengers which makes travel slower.
- cheaper fare than the Bus.
BUS
These are the buses owned by large companies (Partas, Dominion, Florida, Farinas, etc.) that has many fleets and usually ply the major highways of the island. All or most of it are provided with aircons.
- good for long distance travel such as from San Fernando City to the neighboring provinces of Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Abra, Pangasinan or to Metro Manila and City of Baguio.
- It has smaller number of stop-overs.
