SPANISH WATCHTOWERS #8 San Esteban (Ilocos Sur)

"I got a feeling that the barangay was named after the energy giving cells called Batteries which we call it in Ilocano as BATERIA. Funny, even the watchtowers' shapes are like batteries. Just a silly thought."

-my pagnapagna-

After coming from Santiago and Narvacan, my last destination for that day was the Bateria Watchtower of San Esteban, Ilocos Sur.
11:53 am at Sulvec, Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, I rode a mini-bus going back south to the town of San Esteban.
From the mini-bus, I got down at the barangay Villa Quirino (12:20 pm), San Esteban, Ilocos Sur. Villa Quirino is the Barangay before the Barangay of Bateria when coming from the National Highway going towards west.

Hungry, I went to eat at a local eatery nearby. Stayed there for a while just to pass the time and avoid the hot noon sun but I was not patient.
It was 12:46 pm when i started walking going westward at a road along the seashore.

I finally, arrived at the watchtower.

The "Bateria Watchtower" !!???

I finally arrived at the miniature Bateria Watchtower. Constructed by the Barangay near the entry point  where the real Bateria Watchtower is located.
A few more walks and their it was the Bateria Watchtower (1:02 pm)

This is the real Bateria watchtower

A family were resting and having a picnic at a shed nearby.
I took a shelter at another shed near the watchtower then went down at the seashore to do a sketch under the hot afternoon sun.

It was 3:17 pm when i departed the area and walked my way back. I arrived at the national highway at 3:27 pm where i waited for a bus going back to Home Sweet Home.

Watchtower at Bateria

One of the most intact old Spanish watchtower in the province of Ilocos Sur is this one located at a coastal roadside at Barangay Bateria.

the walls engulfed with roots

Recently painted white (as of time of writing) and the trees that had engulfed its walls has been cut down as an effort to preserve the said structure.

From my inspection:
- its merlons are just like the one with the watchtower at Sabangan Cove
- open to the public

How to get there:

From Manila take a bus bound for any of these Nortwest Luzon places : Laoag City (Ilocos Norte), Bangued (Abra) or Vigan City (Ilocos Sur).
You must get down at Barangay Villa Quirino of the municipality of San Esteban, Ilocos Sur where there is a road going west from the national highway. Villa Quirino is located a few minutes away from the town proper of San Esteban going north along the national highway and it is just after the San Esteban National High School.
At Barangay Villa Quirino, take the road going west passing by their Barangay Hall and the pier along the seacoast until you get to Barangay Bateria. The watchtower is just along the road.
